My name is Cathy Fuquay and I have loved dabbling in art since I was a child. I also have a sincere and profound love for animals. In 2007, after hinting around to my family for a couple of years that a portrait of my dog, Derby, would make a lovely gift, I finally gave up and decided I would learn to paint on my own. So began my journey into animal portraiture.....all for the love of a dog. I continued watercolor portraits for many years, and would squeeze in some commissions, as time permitted, with my full time job in health care.
Being an avid quilter as well, I began to pursue turning animal portraits into "fabric art". This process involves dividing shades and textures in a photo into a "puzzle" of sorts, utilizing values and shades in batik fabrics, before combining it into a virtual quilted wall hanging portrait. In 2021, I discovered colored pencil portraiture, and am more than excited about the level of detail and realism that can be achieved. Although this medium is much more time consuming, averaging easily 20-30 hours, the results are well worth it! |
